What makes us different
We all make mistakes, right? Sure we do, and that is okay. I am writing this article because in recent years it has felt like a chunk of the people who play WoW don’t understand that and resort to offensive abuse.
The problem
I think most of us have already been here at least once or twice. You join a PUG group, make one little mistake and then you immediately get called out for it in a rude way. While constructive criticism is a good thing, just yelling at someone in anger is not. Too many times lately I have seen this happen, both to myself and to other guild members.
It does not help
Getting angry at someone when things go wrong is easy, but it won’t help. Like I said, we all make mistakes, but we won’t learn from them if we get called out in a mean way every time we make one. Instead of telling someone they suck because they stood in the fire, it is way better to tell them not to stand in the fire. It’s not rocket science.
How we do it differently
While our guild is not big on rules, we do expect our members to be respectful to each other. And in our experience, that works. For example, we have had raid evenings where one person got us wiped because they made a mistake. Instead of getting angry at them, we explained what they did wrong and helped them understand the mechanic. And in the end, we did get the boss down. But wouldn’t it have been faster to just kick that person from the raid? In the short term, maybe. But if we start kicking every raid member for making a mistake, we will have no raid group left by the end of the raid tier. We take our time and invest in our raid group members so that we all get better as a collective. That’s the way of the Strawberry Tigers.
